Under dash panel question

So I replaced the cruise control amplifier on my 1980 450sl.
I now have cruise control!!
I removed the lower dash panel to get to the amplifier and I noticed heat-AC duct tubing has an opening that is directed towards the feet.
Now that opening faces/blows directly onto the lower panel when it is in place. The panel has no slot/openings on the panel for the air to reach the cabin. In other words, the air blows right onto the lower under dash panel and goes no where.
So I thought maybe the previous owner replaced the lower panel with an incorrect part/panel and no, it is correct.
Anyone know why this would be like this?

Lastly, of course, I cant get the amplifier back in place. There is no room in that area under the dash!

Dwayne, irt the amplifier, I just pried out the tabs on the can and replaced the pc card only. Slides right out. Bend the tabs back and good to go.

Look at the panel. Air passes through into the door. Later models did not have the connection.

Correct, but what I'm saying is that the duct/vent leads to nothing. It is blocked by the top of the panel. There is no hole at the top of the under dash panel to allow the flow of heat to the door.
That being said what is the purpose of feeding heat into the door? Keep it dry and rust free?
