560SL in car temp sensor

Is there anyone out there that knows where to find one of these?
Original MB part #12383005721? (Pounded that number out without looking I've been searching so long)
Thanks

At this point junkyard. Try W124 also, probably the same.

What sort of problem are you trying to fix? The temp sensors don't fail very often, certainly not as often as the much later cars do. The silver temperature regulator box behind the glove box is a common source of erratic temperature regulation (or lack of it entirely).

When I start the car initially everything works fine. Blower and compressor start up, air is good and cold. When I shut the engine off after arriving somewhere and come back to start it later, the compressor and blower won't come on. I think I've boiled it down to the sensor because, if I take and put a towel over it and the sun doesn't directly on it heating it up, the compressor and blower start up right away! I found a new one at New-Part.com - Import and Domestic Auto Parts and Accessories so I'm probably going to order it before I take the old one out or start rooting around under the dash. I know there's about 7" of foam line going to it that will need replacing for sure and maybe that's all it needs but think I'd be better off getting a new one "just in case" anyway as they are becoming a scarce as hen's teeth. If it still doesn't cure it, I will try and source a temp control module. It's right behind the glove box and not difficult to get at. Thought the sensor, being small and none too complicated, would be inexpensive but should have known that nothing Mercedes Benz is inexpensive. lol

Update on www.newpart.com - They are out! They no longer have the sensor available. Apparently the site is their old one and for some reason they can't delete it.
I did find one (ordered but not received as yet) at https://www.mercedes-benz-downtowncalgary.ca/ parts person Scott 403 232 6402. Said warehouse inventory showed 5 (4 left after mine gets here) Mercedes is not having any more made apparently so, if you think you need one, here's maybe the last chance to get an off the shelf brand new one.

The blower should always come on, at least at a low speed regardless of what the temperature is and you should be able to override it by pressing the high speed fan button. Its failing to come on indicates the silver box is your most likely suspect. I went through this in my SL last year, the definitive fix was the silver box. There are capacitors that leak and destroy the circuit card, the result is erratic blower behavior and/or erratic temperature regulation.

Thanks I will check it out. Reason I went with the sensor first is that other posters show about a 7" piece of foam tubing attached to the sensor they say disintegrates from age and I want to change it as well. Everything being so old, I'm afraid to start on it unless I have parts to replace thinking that I might accidentally break off the sensor (other posters have done this apparently) while trying to remove the white piece that goes around it and I don't want to find myself without a new one. I've attached a jpg of what the space behind my glove box looks like. Haven't touched a thing, just looked so far!

The tube is there to draw air through the sensor when the blower fan runs. It serves the same purpose as the "aspirator fan" that showed up in the late model W126 and W124 cars. The fan has to be running to draw air across the sensor, hence why I suggested going straight for the silver box first rather than replacing the sensor (which is probably fine). If any of the buttons are pressed on the climate control unit, the fan should be running, at least on its lowest speed. The fan never cycles off completely.

Incidentally, the silver box is visible (barely) in your photo. Front and center below the pink vacuum pods is the cruise control amplifier. Behind it to the right on the firewall is a black plastic box, this is the relay box for the fan resistor control. Directly behind it is your silver box (you can just barely see the top sticking up over the black box) which is the brains of the whole HVAC operation. It's a pill to get to, patience is a virtue!

Thanks again! If I tackle the module, do you know where to get another? Rebuilt?

Programma sells rebuilt units, look up forum member "James Dean", he does rebuild on the climate control units.

Not related to Jimmy Dean of sausage and country music fame?
Thanks Diseasel. I would not have any idea which one of the modules was which without your response to my query and your specifically pointing it out from my picture is much appreciated. Note I updated one of my previous posts on availability of new sensors. Dealership in Calgary Alberta says they have a warehouse in Ontario showing five (four now I hope) still left. Got to be just about the last new ones left in North America if not the world.

Replaced both the in cabin temp sensor and the piece of foam tubing leading to it. Old tubing fell apart in my hands! Seems to (touch wood) be working. Took it for a ride, left it out in the blazing sun while having lunch and lo and behold, the AC came right back on about 10 seconds after starting the engine. Stopped off to watch a local show and shine, again leaving it in the hot sun, and again it came right back on after starting (about 10 sec - timed it after initially estimating 30) Setting was on 18 degrees and on auto fan speed too. Thinking I may have bought the sensor for nothing and that it was all the fault of the disintegrating tubing now but, what the hey! It's working! (for the moment anyway)

The 30 second delay says the silver box is still bad. There should be no delay in A/C mode. It may work kinda ok for now, but it'll get to the point where the fan gets a mind of its own or fails to run.

Diseasel, do you have a website handy for Programma? Can't find it and neither can I seem to find Jimmy Dean anywhere?
Going to look at the silver box next. A few on Ebay but they're just pulled out of cars and haven't been reworked. Take an awful chance there I think though one's as low as $45. The removal and installation would be the greater risk there.
