Stereo system upgrade.

At some point in time, the Becker was removed from my 1987 560 and a Kenwood was installed. They went as far as cutting two 6" holes in the rear parcel shelf to add full range speakers. While I'm not thrilled with the rear speakers, it did make sense to add something more than the dash speakers.

At any rate, I'm getting close to the point that I need to upgrade the sound system. I already have plans to upgrade the speakers to Infinity, which is what I have used in many other vehicles in the past. I know the front speakers are tiny, which is why the rears were installed.

I'm thinking about a powered enclosed subwoofer...a thin, small enclosed and powered unit that would only need a power and ground wire ran to it from the battery. Has anyone done this yet, and if so, how and where did you mount it?

What is under the parcel shelf? Do you guys think it would be a good place to put one? It will need to be strongly attached to the body to get the best bass out of it.

I've already chosen the head that matches what I recently put in my truck. The Kenwood KDC-BT375U. It works well for my needs, which means it streams my music, which is normally playing something on Spotify.

My biggest fear is finding out that a proper harness wasn't used in the past. I have no idea how they wired the stereo, and after dealing with the same issue in my truck, I know I won't be happy if they didn't.

Why don't you lift the parcel shelf and find out what's under it?

I kid, I kid.

I just installed a new kenwood headunit and some very cheapo walmart speakers into the original holes.

Most likely, if your current system works correctly (especially the antenna control) then it was wired correctly.

There isn't a lot to screw up behind there compared to a later model vehicle.

As for the parcel shelf, there's a lot of space under the shelf for you to mount an amp and woofer. I wouldn't get too mad about them cutting it up for that. A lot of guys do that since it's a much better option to cutting up the MBTEX side panels.

The parcel shelf can easily be rebuilt or a spare re-carpeted to match your car's color.

Even better, spring for the rear "kinderseats" so you can plop little ones back there.
