Questions purchased 1987 350SLC euro

First off I have never heard of this model and the car is very odd. Car is from Aspen so I assume someone brought over from Europe and didnt care about the cost at the time.

Correction 1978 350SLC euro model, confusion

The car has some odd climate control, euro headlights with wipers and the engine is different from a 560SL.

Look at that blue cloth interior, WOW. I guess the euros didnt want leather? Funny the side windows have some type of louvers?

Bumpers are euro.

Rims are something never seen before called Daytona Wire Rims and real Mercedes rims?

Any advice on this would be great. Thinking of putting some parts on my wifes 560SL.

Is this a rare car or just a piece of ****? I got a pretty good deal so either way no big deal.

I can’t see pics. It seems you need to authorize people to see your uploaded pics (and have them login via google).

I would love a manual transmission 350slc.

I would love to see pictures of the 350slc.

Edit:
And didn’t you already start patting out a perfectly rust free 1973 450sl to put bumpers on the 560sl already?

1972 350sl barn find part out or rebuild?

Feels like you just love tearing apart these old classics. I guess that makes the rest of them maybe harder to find, but a 350slc is potentially a great classic, 6500 rpm revving v8. Sure, no 5.0, but it’s got the looks of one. The SLC cars really need the small bumpers to look good IMO. Please give it some time to be appreciated before tearing it apart.

Fonzi, if you want to buy these 20+ year old yard art cars and then restore them great! I recently restored a range rover that took 2 years and 8 parts trucks to complete. NEVER AGAIN, spending over $25,000 on a rover that is worth at most $15,000.

If you want to spend $20,000 on a car that might be worth 10K more power to you. Also, the 1972 350SL had two prior owners that were PLANNING on restoring it and found out it was too much work and the car was NO rust free . I ended up giving most of the parts to a friends 1974 450SL.

This is why I hate the boards with others telling you what you should be doing, next someone is going to tell me to stop using straws because I am killing turtles and I live in Denver....

You are the one that asked for advice and you got some. No reason for you to get your panties in a wad.

The climate control is not weird it is the base model manual system. Standard from '71-'77 107s in the US and some Euro models through the 80s. AC and automatic climate control were also options on Euros. Cloth was base model interior. MBTex and leather were options. The auto trans and headlight wipers were also options. The louvers are original on a SLC. The wire wheels are not Mercedes and they will not fit the front of a 560SL. IMO it has some decent parts to sell.

Now that I can see the pictures and the body damage on this SLC, I agree it makes a great parts car. It looks like it has clear back glass which has gotten very hard to find.

The valve covers look a little far apart for a m116 3.5, which would be cool due to at least th higher compression wads that can bolt onto a 4.5. But I think it plus be even cooler if it turns out to have a euro 4.5 motor. Those are nearly as powerful as the 5.6. If the car is a 3.5, it should have a desirable 3.46 differential, and if a 4.5 should have anti-squat rear suspension, also probably desirable. I see a goldmine if parts in that SLC. It does appear too far gone to restore, which is a shame, but I’m smelling about $4000 of pretty easy-selling parts on that thing. I hope you’ve gotta time and space to part it out and pick it pretty clean before it gets crushed.

Few thing I noticed.

1. The front bumper doesnt have the old bump stops and clean one piece.

2. Front bumper has built in washers? Cool!

3. No front turn signals?

4. Speaker adjustment on center console?

5. Interesting door panels, two tone cloth!

6. Rear crank windows.

7. Wire wheels are complete and was quoted about $700 to refinish each wheel, can that be correct??

8. Still have not determined the engine size.

9. Speedo is MPH but euro car?

10. This will be a fun project.

11. I couldnt find if the headlights are adjustable yet?

Any advice or ideas is appreciated!

Normal for a euro car. 72-73 US bumpers have the vertical bars.

2. Front bumper has built in washers? Cool!

Yes. That is normal with headlight wiper systems.

3. No front turn signals?

The Euro headlight amber lights are turn signals. Euro parking lights are little white bulbs in the headlight area.

4. Speaker adjustment on center console?

That’s the rear speaker fader.

5. Interesting door panels, two tone cloth!

Cloth is very common for euro cars.

6. Rear crank windows.

Interesting to me that euro cars often have power front and manual rear windows. Why? I’d want power for the rear, but maybe it keeps kids from playing with them. Who knows.

7. Wire wheels are complete and was quoted about $700 to refinish each wheel, can that be correct??

Rust on the wire wheels ruins them. It’s a shame.

8. Still have not determined the engine size.

M117 is 4.5. M116 is 3.5. The engine number is visible behind the head cover on the machine area of the block that is angled towards the brake booster. It’s pretty hard to see, usually requiring contortion, cleaning and lights.

9. Speedo is MPH but euro car?

Usually they get swapped out when federalize.

10. This will be a fun project.

Are you going to make it run right before parting it out?

11. I couldnt find if the headlights are adjustable yet?

I think a 1978 didn’t have vacuum adjustable headlights yet. They came along later.

Any advice or ideas is appreciated!

Make it run well. Clean it. Then decide. Looks like a good part out to me.

Edit... replace the hood and maybe it will look good. Hard to tell. Replace the wheels with something stock to solve that problem.

The Dayton Wire Wheels should run around $700 or more to refinish as the set. Check with Buckeye Wheels in Dayton Ohio...great people to work with. When properly refinished, expect to be able get double your investment...I know a guy in Cincinnati that would love a set.

This is velours upholstery, not standard cloth. Velours was expensive option, little cheaper that leather.
Electric window lifters was laso an option. Front el. window lifters was cheaper than f&r.
For me engine looks like M116 3.5

Can anyone see from the pics if the bushings between the valve cover and the air cleaner are a straight vertical “up” (like m117)or whether they have the “winders” that the m116 have? I can’t see.

The chassis designation, 107.023, identifies it as built with an M116.98x.

I agree the car should have a 3.5, but it looks like a 4.5 to me.

Take a look at the engine shot here, and notice that the crankcase ventilation on the left (right in picture) side lines up with the rubber mount for the wingnut for the air cleaner.

https://www.pioneer-automobiles.co.uk/Resources/library/Mercedes%20350SL%20Convertible.html

But take a look at the same shot on the OP's car, and see the crankcase ventilation hose appears wider out than the air cleaner wingnut rubber mount.

I think the OP's car has a 4.5 in it. I've stared at a few 3.5 and 4.5 motors and have begun to see the difference just by looking at it and thinking "that looks wide" or "that looks narrow".
