Always wanted an R107...now I have one...not sure what to do with it
 

I’ve wanted an r107 for quite some time and couldn’t resist a local “barn find”. It’s a ‘73, 12/72 build date in my favorite color combo, astral silver on red.

It hasn’t run in some time but allegedly will fire off on starting fluid. The biggest problem is rust. And the PO let the car roll off a trailer into a fence, ruining the drivers side door. There is rust in the soft top area, the area behind the front seats under the cover where the rear seats would go if so equipped, and behind seemingly every hole the belt line trim attaches through.

The unfortunate realization I’ve come to is that parting it out will likely be a much better financial decision than trying to do any work to it, especially with the market on early 450’s being soft.

What are your thoughts?

Get another and decide what parts you will need, and which parts you don’t. Sell off what you don’t.

The thin bumpers are worth big $$$

Any actual pictures of the rust? Given your location I'm betting what you consider terminal rust is a 6 year old car from a road salt / snow area.

It apparently sat in Florida for a long time prior to being moved to Georgia.

I'll take some photos of the rust and post them later.

Good news is, I worked on it yesterday and found that it does turn over quite easily and fire on starting fluid so maybe I'll just try to sort the fuel system out and get it running and driving before making a decision.

Also, just curious - does anyone think the hard top and hub caps would be original to the car in a contrasting color? I actually work for a Benz dealer and looked at the option codes but didn't see anything relating to that, other than the option for the hard top itself.

It's a toss up. The colors do work together. The top " might " be serialized. Maybe look for details like a data code on the tops glass / back of hub caps.

There are two color codes. Check the data plate on the radiator support. Look for the build sheet under the seat or under the plastic jack foot cap. Two tone paint was pretty common on the early 107s, as was the red interior.

Makes sense now. In the paint code area of the data plate it has "735 G 040 G", so astral silver and black. So this is actually correct.

The " G " would be Glasurit brand paint. Also S = Sikkens , ( ? ) = Dr. Herbert and there may be others.

Plan on going thru the entire fuel system starting at tank.

Been there, done that! Good luck. Make sure to torque everything back correctly to spec. I didn't and FML the stupid thing leaked when it got hot outside.
