1985 380SL oil pump
Hi guys, I am working on a '85 380SL, replacing the camshafts, chain, guides, etc. Anyway, I have the engine out and on the stand, and I got to wondering about the oil pump. The engine has a lot of varnish and crud in it that I am cleaning out. Is there a way to rebuild the pump? I am not finding any kits when I search, and a new pump seems to be extremely expensive.
I bought the car non running, due to the camshafts, which seems to be caused by severe lack of maintenance. Anyway, I don't know what kind of oil pressure it had before. I am wondering if I should take the oil pump apart, I would sure hate to find out I have an issue after I get the engine back in the car. Thanks! |

I would take it to my automotive machinist who would look at it and decide whether it needed to be rebuilt or not. Sometimes the parts have to come from Germany. They should be available though. ...but get it looked at it might be fine.

camshaft wear was probably caused by a loose oiler tube it's not impossible to get the engine running on the ground. Just hook up the ignition (I could find a wiring diagram for you) and just run it on starter fluid. |

X2 on taking it to a machinist. You could probably save a few bucks by methodically disassembling and cleaning the parts first.
If you take it apart, matchmark the gears etc. and leave it apart for the machinist to inspect. Good luck!!!

Thanks guys! I think I will take it apart and see if it's scored up in there, and go from there.

I don't know those pumps in particular but some pumps have plates that can be resurfaced. Should also be able to find a spec to measure wear between the gears with a feeler gauge. Excessive wear between the gears would be a call for a new pump.
Good luck!!!
