Ignition Lock Tumbler Cylinder w/Key, 116 462 02 79

Hi everyone, we've seen several posts from folks in need of NLA Mercedes Ignition Lock Tumbler Cylinder w/Key, part number 116 462 02 79. We developed this cylinder/key assembly and just completed the first production run, and will update this thread as soon as Pelican adds it to their catalog.

In the meantime, here are the applications:

280SE, 1977-1980
290S, 1975-1976
300SD, 1978-1980
350SL, 1972
380SLC, 1981
380SL, 1981-1985
450SE / 450SEL, 1973-1976
450SL / 450SLC, 1973-1980
450SEL, 1977-1979 (4.5L & 6.8L)
450SEL, 1980

Prior versions of part number 1164620279 would be 116 460 06 04 (1164600604) and 116 460 08 04 (1164600804).

Are you positive about the model year interchange and 1164620279 fits all of those 107 models? Looking forward to that picture.

I'm also curious about this. My 500SL Euro has a replacement ignition tumbler with one very worn out key and I've been unable to source a replacement for 2 decades (not even from the Classic Center). The EPC shows 1164620279 as the correct tumbler for it. I'm not a huge fan of Uro parts, but in this case it may be a better solution than an NLA lock and hoping that a worn out brass nub will keep working for years to come...

Would it not be desirable to have the replacement tumbler pinned to one's existing key (and a new replacement key made), so that the car can continue to be operated with one key pattern rather than two?

I bought a tumbler w/key for my '84 500SL about six years ago from the Classic Center. I know they are now NLA now. It was not keyed to my car. At the same time I bought a replacement for my '86 560SL keyed to my car. Not sure those are still available.

It would but last ones I know that were available were for the '86 up models.

In a perfect world, yes. In reality sometimes you have to take what you can get. The car already had an aftermarket ignition tumbler with a brass Ilco key when it came into our hands in 1998. 2 separate keys doesn't bother me, it was the norm for just about every American car up into the 90s. One very worn out ignition key and one door/trunk/glovebox key does.

Strange. I've found the Classic Center less than helpful trying to get parts for my '83. I called 10 or so years ago to try to get a replacement tumbler and was told they were NLA even back then. When I asked about getting a 2nd key cut, I was told that they don't cut keys for Euro cars after I gave them the VIN. I have to wonder if it's some sort of snobbiness since it's a grey-market car and was registered abroad before being imported by the first car (loophole so it didn't have to be federal converted). Perhaps they've changed their tune, but every time I've called them I've gotten bad service or an attitude from the person on the other end of the phone which just doesn't jive with other people's experience with them.

We pulled those apps from Worldpac, but will go over them again prior to uploading to our catalog. Pelican should have the item added to their catalog shortly - we'll post the link once we have it.

That tumbler is for models with the black metal screw on cap from 1978? through 1985. Not absolutely sure of the 1978 year start.
Here is a pic. of a '72 450SL assembly.

That is strange. I had a great relationship with Tom Hanson and the others at the Classic Center. Bought many parts that were Euro specific. They have kind of suffered since Mercedes got greedy with the EPC and data cards.

Yes indeed, the housing with the black cap. Here's the OE sample in our library, next to our replacement cylinder kit.

Black screw on cap. Around 1974 they changed from chrome in my picture to black plastic. Found this picture of a '77 on line
