R107 Center Vents - which pod to plug to keep them on?

Hello all,

I am the new owner of a 1986 560sl. It was my father's car, and has been parked in a garage for the past 20 years. I just had my mechanic do the due diligence to get it back running (well, might I add).

My center vents are not working. I am not interested in pulling the entire dash off to repair the pods. I have seen several people state that they "plug" a pod and were able to get some air out of the center vents - I am looking for this option! Can anyone give me a little detail about what this procedure entails? the vacuum-assisted controls are beyond my understanding right now.

Thanks in advance,
Cyrus

To accomplish what you are asking for really requires the removal of the dash unless you have very small hands. You may be able to gain access to the center pod by removing the glove box. Remove the vacuum hose from the center pod controlling the center air flap. Plug the hose. Then it is a matter of finding a way to hold the center air flap open. It can be held open using a tie strap. Find a re-run of the TV program Wheeler Dealers. Ed China performed this very operation on a 107 car with the dash out. Good luck.

A simple fix it to get a wooden dowel about 12 inches long and force it into the vent, that will open the vent so it works. You can push the dowel into the vent so no one can see it. Redneck fix, but works and costs $1.

New to the site, my name is Ricky from the Myrtle Beach are of SC. I have a 1984 380sl. Its been garage kept for more than 10 years. I have been going through it learning as I go and loving it. However; sometimes I wish I could ask someone a question or two that is familiar with the 107's. The car has 180,000 miles but been taken care of forever. Hope to talk to some of you guys along the way.

Ricky
