560sl center vents

The usual. Vents not opening. Pod 38 or 40 kaput? Maybe? My problem is just a little different I think in that, if I just touch the vent flap(s) inside the center, voila, they just roll open! Just a light touch! I'm tempted to just give it all a squirt of WD40 down there but wondered if that might gum things up even more so? Thanks
PS Last thing I want is to tear the dash apart, that's certain. Climate control assy just redone as was temp regulator by Kris Rose, Niles Ohio and working great.

The box they are attached to cracks over time and stops them from working properly--the problem with plastic. Eventually, you will have to pull it and reinforce the plastic where the vents attach with light weight sheet metal on both sides while gluing and riveting them together. While you're in there, you can replace all of the diaphragms and they will work for another 30 years.
