I have two 280SL 5 speed manuals.

280sl 5-speed manuals are far more common than v8 manuals. 6 cylinder manual MB are darn near everywhere, but the 3.5 is the only v8 MB ever put a manual on besides some very rare w109 cars.

I have never seen in person a 107 v8 with a stick. What number would be rare in your mind? I Have seen a 107 six stick I believe, or at least I know of a fellow who has or had one here.

I have a 73 350slc 4-speed. It is very rusty and was not running when I got it. I had to redo the clutch hydraulics after making it run.

I have seen several on BAT. Pretty sure all 3.5 manuals are Non US market. Here's a few: https://bringatrailer.com/auctions/results/?search=350sl+4+speed
I know all manual 3.5 coupes are Non US market.

I’ve seen a few v8 350slc 4-speed cars, only one comes to mind honestly though. There might have been one I recall seeing in California. I can’t remember the name of the forum member that definitely had one in the Minnesota area with an unbalanced drive shaft, so it wasn’t highway worthy. Mine was a pile when I got it, and is the same pile, but running and driving now.

All 3.5 m116 are euro with the exception of the w111 coupes, and MAYBE some w109 possibly. I guess it is remotely possible that there are w108 3.5 US, but I don’t think so.

300SEL 3.5 was offered as a US market car but not the 280SE 3.5. There was a stick shift version of the 300SEL 3.5 but not US. In fact I believe every car that was offered with the 3.5 had a stick shift version. There was no US stick shift 3.5 coupe.

Thanks! Sounds like what I would expect, and I appreciate the backup info without having to research it. I’ve got three 4 speed v8 107 cars, two are SL, one SLC. Coincidentally they are all 72-73 models. My friend Jason Birch has a US 450 SLC that had a previous owner put the 4-speed into, and we also purchased together another 72-73 350slc 4-speed. So I guess that’s 5 of these rare v8 manual transmissions that we own between the two of us. We’ve bought just about every cheap one we’ve been able to get our hands on knowing that the flywheel, and transmission alone are enough to pay for many of the cars. Add some high compression 3.5 heads, maybe euro bumpers and a few other parts, and these are solid investments even if we never were to make them run and drive. And once you feel the torque of a 4.5 or 5.0 with the manual trans behind it, you will understand why these are worth it. Sure, the 3.5 isn’t as torquey, and MB made the mistake of not putting the anti-squat rear end in the 3.5. So the (short wheel vase) 350sl tilts back too much when letting off the clutch. Bad shocks could make you feel like you are ridding in a baby buggy.

Sounds like you have the market cornered on stick shift 3.5's. Not to many around here. I probably have the only one in Oregon. That's mainly what is motivating my T5 conversion. I can put my 4speed safely on a shelf.
