77 SL Keys Lost - Need to Get One Made

Hi All,

I need to get a key(s) made for my 77 Sl. I can't go to the dealer because the car is not registered in my name. Its a project I bought 3 years ago, have no time, and just want to get it driveable and sold.

I have the ignition switch with lock and in fact the steering column is out to replace the shaft coupler/joint. Reading the owner's manual, it seems the door key will also fit the igniton and trunk and glove box?

Should I have the locksmith make a key from the ignition or the door lock? I want the car to have one key for all locks. I will bring both locks in case the ignition lock is not original. Thanks!

I am not sure if the locksmith can do that on a car but you may as well ask. it works on building locks.

If you have the ignition lock in your hand, how about just buying a used ignition lock with a key? Post a WTB ad here for an ignition lock with a master key.

There are basically 2 keys for this vintage of Mercedes. The master key will start the car, open all the doors and the trunk; it has a square key head. The valet key will also start the car, but it only opens the driver's door; it has a round key head.

Title it.

If you can get title in your name, the dealer will help. It does not have to be registered. A new key should only be $30 or so. If impossible, the other best option would be to get an aftermarket ignition lock with a key, get it running, sell it, then have the new owner obtain the factory key. If desired, they can change the ignition to the factory set.

Is it possible for a locksmith to make a new key for the ignition lock?
