Unhappy Help - $1200 R129 ADS Shock Absorber !!!

My 1990 R129 500SL has ADS Adjustable Damper System with some type of hydraulic and gas setup. Anyway the rear left corner started to get very jittery so I took it to a dealer. The diagnosis was a failed "actuator" in the left rear shock/. They say it needs a new shock (incuding actuator?) costing $1200 plus maybe another $300 to fit it. IS THIS REAL????? They also say the system was very rare, and that HQ in Germany is out of spare shocks, and they have to ask the original manufacturer to make one.

When I was at my MB mechanic's shop the last time, he was doing the shock replacement on a 600SL with the same system, and I believe I remember him saying that they were about $900 for each side.

Got it back yesterday. Not as painful as expected. She needed both rear shocks and spheres. $450 each corner plus labour. But now I know what the ADS is really like, and I'm impressed.
