AC works when it wants to

My 1986 300E AC unit did not work. The systems is fully charged and the service tech checked for voltage getting to the clutch, found none. He then by-passed everything and went directly from the battery and the clutch still did not engage. I was ready to order a clutch when the systems started working, blowing cold. Worked great for three days and then stoped again. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

Mick

If you applied 12 volts directly to the clutch coil and it did not engage, then its bad - replace it. It might be intermittant.

Thanks, Dave, can the clutch be replaces without removing the compressor from the engine thereby not requiring to recharge the systems?

PS.. by the way... nice collection of toys.

Yes it can but it might be hard to remove the necessary circular clips without being able to see down the center and limited access space in front. You might have to remove the radiator or unbolt the compressor so you can rotate it to remove the clutch. You will probably need a puller to remove the drive (clutch) plate before you are able to remove the pulley and electromagnet.

dpetryk, where does one acquire the puller necessary for the removal of the clutch? Are there any other special tools needed?

Thanks in advance

Dont know. I was lucky enuf to be able to pry mine off without needing a special tool. It looks like the drive plate is set up for a special puller. It has inside threads which are typical for special tools. There is risk if you pry it off especially if its still on the car.

You might want to be real, real, real sure that the compressor is grounded before you condemn it. That is, be sure you are getting both + and - to the clutch. It'd be a shame to replace it and find out it was good all along...
