Gas leak...newbie!!!

Hi folks,

Thought I'd introduce myself having just found this much-needed site.

Just bought a 1987 560SL about a week and a half ago. I live in AZ but the car spent a bit of time in the North-East, and I knew that going into it. Got a good deal though, comparatively speaking, and really love the car, plus it runs very well. Also - best news - found a great mechanic with reasonable rates who knows his stuff and is down to earth.

So last night on my way home, and only having owned the car for all of 11 days, it stalled at the freeway off-ramp traffic signal. Would turn over and just not start. Was very disheartening. Someone yelled to me that they smelled gas as they drove past, and sure enough as I walked around to the back I saw that I probably dropped a gallon from the back. Looks like it's right around the fuel pump/filter area and probably just a hose. My mechanic is looking at it right now.

Oh well. It's a used car right! Also it pulls ever so slightly to the left when braking (probably a sticky caliper) and the steering gear-box is leaking at the top so it probably needs a seal kit.

First Mercedes I've owned, and even with the above minor issues, I've got a good perspective on it. It is my daily driver as well.

Well, I'm enjoying this forum from the posts I've read so far, and hopefully I can contribute as much as learn! I'm a medium skilled back-yard mechanic so I will enjoy working on the car myself in most situations. Gas leak isn't on of them!

I'll post pictures as soon as I can take them and you will find I'll become a very active member of this forum.

Thank God the Arizona heat is starting to dissipate so I can drop my top until next summer!!!
