300sl sputtering
I bought a 1991 300sl a few months ago and love the car. It has one (maybe two) frustrating problems. When starting the car it will immediately stall and then another hit of the key it will start and sputter for a short period of time. There will be a strong odor of gas in the garage. Sometimes it will sputter and stall after trying to drive off. After the car will run perfect. It was seen by a shop when the previous owner had the same problem. That shop replaced the timing chain. I took it there a few months ago and he wanted to replace the fuel pumps. ($500) At that time I didnt think that was the problem. I took it to another shop and he thought it was the fuel injectors were leaking. He cleaned? the injectors and replaced the fuel filters. I spent $400. Now he wants to replace the injectors-another $500. Has anyone experienced the same problem? Should I have the injectors replaced? Any advice would help.

Sorry to say it sounds like the injectors. How many miles are on the car?

The car has 140,000 miles. It doesnt appear that injectors are difficult to replace. Does anyone know if there are any tricks to replace them or special tools?
