mending a 560sl soft top

Any advice? I am trying to rethread the rear panel in my softtop. The canvas is in great shape but the thread is dry rotting. The rear panel is completely out and it is impossible to stitch because of how tight you have to pull it. Do you have any suggestions? Who does this type of work?
Thanks,
rob

ps..what's it cost to have someone put another top on?

It will cost you around $800 for the top plus installation. Check out this site:

I just bought mine in www.************************ for $400.00 (Original style canvas)and in Puerto Rico cost me $200.00 for the installation, so don't bother trying to fix the old one. Also try in Adsitco.com, they have it too. Remember to always buy the best canvas available, good luck.

I was quoted 1,400 at the dealership and 1,200 at a good top shop (non OEM). I wound up buying OEM off EBAY and doing it myself. It was a real headache to get it just right. Maybe it's easier the 2nd time.

I noticed that I could buy off ebay for $300 but still don't know who i'd take it to for installation. Any ideas? I am pretty sure my patience wouldn't allow me to attempt this myself.
Thanks!

Soft top

I bought my soft top off of eBay for $300. Excellent quality came from Cabrio in New Jersey. I then went to an auto upholstery shop and told them I got the soft top when I purchased the car. They installed it for $300. So for $600 I was back in business.

Thanks Larry,
Will any upholstery shop do it? Did you buy your top from the fella in pasedena?

Heriberto Rosas 09-16-2002 02:47 PM

Dont even try to do it, you can damage your top. Check with different car upholterers with experience, there should be a couple in your area. Good luck.

conv top

I installed my top myself, fairly straightforward installation, just a lot of patience needed. If you decide to go that route send me an email and I will send you the installation instructions. Took me about 12-15 hours. Good luck

Thanks for the offer for instructions. I will have to save up because I know I don't have that patience. Thanks so much!
