RPM too high. How to adjust?
Just bought a 1985 280SL. It is a straight 6. The engine runs really high. Is there an adjustment to get it about 500-700 rpm lower? (runs about 1500 rpm and barely goes down when warm).

Hi, as I had about 9 mercedes over the years I happened to find an old book that delt with this particular engine - straight 6. Behind the distributor housing (lower part of it) next to the engine there is a plactic screw with slot through it (looking at it from above all you see is a white circle with the slot for scredriver to be inserted in). Turning it clockwise you lower the rpm. Can you believe it, I have called mercedes benz dealer on thursday and they made it sound like its an incredibly complicated task requiring at least a day in the shop - talking in a $150 range. They were too busy before the weekend so I was to call them tomorrow!!!
Took me less than a minute once I knew what to look for. |
