Insurance Costs
Hi to all,
I was just wondering how much SL people pay for their insurance. I have an "86 560 SL with a clean driving record , no accidents no tickets with a $1000 deductable for collision and I am paying $1800 a year with AIG. I have three other cars and I am an adult driver. I put on probably 3000 miles per year and the car is garaged. When I questioned the insurance co. about the high rates their answer was"Mercedes cost a lot to repair". I live in the NYC area. Is this a lot to pay??? Larry "86 560 SL[ |

560sl insurance
NYC is expensive so your rate might be normal. I pay $800 per year with full coverage with $500 deductible in Northern NJ. I hope this helps or hurts.

I would shop around, I am in the insurance business and different companies charge different rates for different cars. For ex. one company might
charge twice as much as another company for the same coverage on the same type of car. I am paying about $2400 a year for three cars, of which two are benz's. with the same deductable that you have. I live about 100 miles outside of NYC.

Insurance in North Suburban Chicago for my 86 560SL is about $800 with a $250 deductible -- through State Farm.

Just to make you feel better...
Insurance in Ireland is insane. My SL is costing $2600 this year, plus another $1400 for the SEL. I'm expecting the classics to come in at about $500 each with limited mileage. So you see, it's not so bad on your side of the water.

Mine is about $1100/year with $500 deductable, perfect driving record. Phoenix is just rated based on theft and so many accidents. I've shopped around but they are all within $100/year of each other.

Insurance Rates
I got my first Sl in 1987 (70 450 SL). I traded an 82 signature series lincoln continental. My rates went down!!!
For 2 cars my annual rate dropped about $200. Shortly thereafter I moved from Mesa AZ to Scottsdale AZ, my rates jumped almost $300 per year. I checked all this out with my insurer. The drop was due to the low accident rate experienced by SL owners. The raise was due to moving from an area of low cost accidents (fewer high end cars) to an area of expensive accidents (more high end cars). There are an awfully lot af variables involved in rates. Yours do not sound bad for the NYC area. |

State Farm offers Classic insurance. It's much less, they base the rates on maximum miles a given year. The limit on miles is 2,000 per year. The cost should be under 600.00. Try to contact a State Farm Agent. If you normally put 3,000 miles on it maybe you can drive it a bit less and save a bundle.
I'm not sure about the year/age a car would qualify, I have 1978, and 1981 on this type of policy.
