fuel delivery problem?

Hello all,

My 1987 560 SL starts right up, no trembles, from a cold start.

However, when I got to start it when the engine is warm, it sometimes shakes for a second or so then something causes the idle to go to 1000 for less than one second, after that the engine settles back to 500 rpm and runs smooth as silk.

Lately, the first crank while the engine is warm, results in the engine sputtering and dying(though not every time). Second crank is longer and then I have to goose the accelerator a bit and then the engine smooths out.

Could it be bad gas? I am using 93 octane gas but they also put that ethanol crap in it here in the denver area during winter.

Or is there a small leakdown in the fuel system causing loss of pressure and some of the gas to vaporise like in earlier SLs?

any ideas or feedback would be appreciated.

dom

Could be unmetered air getting into the intake. Could be injector seal, auxillary air valve, etc... Warm start problems could be faulty fuel accumulator not holding pressure.

talked to my mb mechanic, my car's scheduled for a fuel pressure test next week, he suspects leaky fuel injectors....more than likely having to replace them all at $30 a pop....joy joy joy. : (

My 88 sl has the same symptoms. Never fails to start just does not idle correctly on the second hot or warm start. Sometimes will die but most often just wheezes until I put it back in park and rev it up. If you figure out what it is please post. Other than this my car is perfect. Thanks, Rob

Bad hot starts

I had the same problems with my 79 450 SLC with 2 engines, it turned out to be the Accumulator. This problem about drove me and my mechanic nuts. See my trials and tribulations on several of my posts. I would sure look into this as a most probable problem. In one of my posts a reply told how to test this unit very simply. Hope this helps. Lee

Has the fuel pressure checked this afternoon, no perceivable drop with ten minutes of watching the gauges. The mechanic believes that the accumulator and check valves are fine. Believes its a small/slow leak in one or more injectors.

So, come the new year, my 560SL is going to the shop to have the injectors replaced.

My 560SEL is behaving the same way. Starts cold ok. Drive to store, come out for hot start, misses like pig, barely idles. Found best bet is to start it with foot half way down, brings revs right up to 2k and hold for a bit. If not , running real rich, tons of smoke out back from unburned fuel. Sure sounds like one (or more) injector slowly leaking. Oil analysis would probably show fuel in oil. Guess I'm gonna have to spring for a full set of injectors. Ouch!
