Antenna height?

On the 560 SL's, how high does your antenna extend when you have the interior switch in the normal position instead of maximum.
I do not believe that one of the sections is extending on mine as it only raises about 3-4 inches.

Thanks,

BD

Mine raises about halfway, at least two sections worth of the antenna mast.

Thanks, that tells me that I need to replace the mast.

I will give the cleaning a try; one section is stuck and does not extend. I will try a shot of WD 40 overnight and see if all the sections will extend for cleaning.

Thanks,

BD

If the antenna will go up all the way on "max", I don't see where messing with the mast will fix it. The inner plastic coil that wraps around the spool is what determines how high it will go. If you put it on "max" and it raises all the way, there must be some internal problem for the reason why it won't go up the 12 inches or so it's supposed to in the middle posion on the antenna switch.
I believe the reason for this position is that the shorter antenna is supposed to be some "optimal" height for FM reception.

Thanks Gilly for the reply. I noticed that the second section never extends, so when the antenna is on normal it only extends 4 to 5 inches. It will go as far up as designed, but that section never moves. For a while I thought this was normal because it has good height on max as well as reception, but on the lower position, as soon as the antenna starts to extend past the set point the radio volume increases and reception improves indicating that it is not high enough on the first preset. I did not want to pull on the section without knowing the way that this should perform. Otherwise the antenna travels up and to the recessed position as it is supposed to.
Thanks,

BD

Just a short question, because i have to go to work:
How could the antenna raise to it's max height if that section is stuck? It couldn't. I still think that whatever is in the motor that regulates the shorter position is messed up, unsure what does that in the motor. Try a a mast if you want.

I am sure that you are correct, I have never seen another SL and the correct operation. I will see if I can get a picture of the mast tonight.

Thanks for the reply,

BD

antenna height

Interesting discussion. The antenna of my 86 sl will only raise half way regarless of swithch setting in half or full. I think it is more likely an electrical problem? Can anyone tell me which wires should have power when the antenna is supposed to be full up. I'm not sure if I have a bad motor, bad switch, or both.
Thanks

In this case, I would say it's more likely that the mast is stuck.
