Smile Dash Pads

Hi
I have a 1975 450sl that has a cracked dash pad in 3 locations.
Has anybody used one of the replacement dash pads that go over the original? I have seen these on ebay and would like to know.
(1) Can they be painted?
(2) Do they fit good?
(3) Are they hard to install?
Thanks

I bought it and it looks nice, take a look. It can be painted and have a lifetime warranty.

I got one a couple years ago from Capitolwest.com for just under a hundred bucks. They come pre-colored from there. Relatively easy to install over existing dash. Still looks good and I have re-dyed my interior of 350SL 4.5 1972 as well. Now need to update carpeting.
I suppose if you needed to change color, your could dye it using the Leatherique as I did on interior.

What was involved in putting the pad on and how much different does it end up looking from the original installation? Thanks ahead for you reply.

You just glue it with silicone, which is included with the cover, and you can almost notice any difference from the original, look at the picture. It took me 5 minutes to install.

I had one put in when I bought the car. It looks a lot better than a cracked dash, but I wouldn't go so far as to say you can't tell the difference from a real one. It's hard plastic, with no give at all like the original. Also, there's no way to make it fit over the other perfectly--you can see it easily around the vents, etc. Mine's dark blue, so it's not at all noticeable, but a lighter color might show up more. You'll probably be the only one who notices, though. Also, it covers up the VIN, though that was no big deal to me. One of these days, I might have a real one put on. I understand its a $1500 job, though.

mINE WAS EASY TO INSTALL BUT AFTER ABOUT 5 YEARS IT SPROUTED A CRACK. wISH i STILL HAD THE RECEIPT FOR THE LIFETIME WARRANTY. tHEY FIT REAL EASY AND LOOK DECENT. Sorry, just noticed had the cap lock on.

Maybe it craked because I didn't follow the silicone glueing instructions correctly. You want the cap to expand and contract correctly with temp swings. Thats why you need to glue it down in the correct locations.

Mine warped becuase i just placed it on top of the old dash and did not glue it ( Big mistake). I called the factory and they just said that all i had to do was cut out from the dash pad the red sticker that is in the back and mail it to them, they dont need the original invoice or nothing. With that they sent me a brand new dash pad. They even paid for the shipping. Its a good warranty.
