On I-88 West of Chicago - new R230
Gold/beige exterior travelling westbound on through Downers Grove on I88 between 7-7:30PM. Would I have been remiss not to pull alongside and give you a thumbs up?

The gold/beige and silver seemed to be the only ones I've seen (although an acquaintance of mine managed to procure a black one from an out-of-town dealership a year ago).
Our local dealership has at least two in stock at all times...same sales pitch..."no test drive allowed unless already purchased" Still selling (and getting) $30K over MSRP. Ridiculous!

We got a number of the "Desert Silver" R230's in to start with. The window sticker did mention something about them being a "Model Launch" vehicle. I think that means that MB speced them out themselves to get a few out there for test drives and the new model launch events (salon showings and such).

Gilly, what requisites do you have...
...to take one of those "Desert Silver" R230s out for a spin (besides drive your current SL in)?

Probably up to the dealership you go to. I'm sure all dealerships will want to see your drivers license. Maybe not if they "know" you well, but they're sticking their necks out with the insurance company if something happens and you've got a suspended license.
Other than that, hard to tell. They probably will normally feel you out a bit to try to tell if you just want a "joy ride" or if you're a serious prospect. Owning a R129 I would assume would help open the door a bit faster, especially a later model. If it's a bigger dealership that has a demonstrator, I would think it would be a big deal. Salesman may want to tag along. If you bring a "significant other" along who wants to share in the test drive, hard to tell if they'd let you take it out solo. Again, probably has alot to do with how serious a prospective owner you are. Gilly
