Congrats on the new ride!!!!

Got my '91 500 SL (80,000 KM) in February and have only put 1,000 km myself, hardtop is still on.

Being an accountant I've been busier than heck but yesterday was the last day of tax season here so today I'm going looking for new rims and a little driving time. :p

Looks great, especially the colour combination. The wheels look great, too. I've had mine for 7 weeks and I've already done 5,000 miles! Driving from north east England to southern France next week. Top down all the way, weather permitting.

Looks awesome, mine is smoke silver also, I LOVE how it looks silver or gold depending on how you look at it. Are those monoblocks? What size are they? I'm still trying to decide between the AMG 5 spoke or the AMG monoblocks, I'm up at nights with the decision, LOL.

Enjoy the ride~!!!

Nice car.

Those AMG rims look great on this chassis.

Hehe, I'm finding the decision tough as well. I find the 5 spokes are overdone (SLK's, CLK's and SL's all over have them) and my Jag had rims very similar to monoblocks.

I'm deciding between BBS RMII's or Mille Replica II's. Depending how much I decide to spend.

I'm trying very very hard to stick with AMG's, so its either the monoblocks or the 5 spoke. Everyone I show pictures to say the 5 spoke. Plus Im going to buy them chromed so they will stand out.

Not to mention tirerack does not carry the 18" monoblocks chromed anymore, so it makes my decision easier.

Actually those are RH wheels I bought from another forum user that he had on his 500E. Fronts are 8 1/2 and rears are 9". Clearance seems fine and balance is the only thing that needs to be fine tuned. With these types of wheels, they can't be balanced perfectly so this may be an issue. I just got back from a 900 mile trip and vibration was a factor.

PJG what are the specifics on the rims? Rim size and width? Are they AMG? What size tires?

Im just trying to narrow down my choices and am a bit nervous about the 18" AMG rubbing on my 96SL500 fenders, so Im asking around. Depending on tireracks availability I may end up buying off Ebay, so need to watch my offsets closely.

Thanx much!

Hey Doc. Those are RH rims, which they are marked, "Made in Germany". The fronts are, excuse me I erred, 8X17, with a 35 offset. I have 235/45's on them. The backs are 9X17, with a 29 offset, with 245/45's on them. I haven't checked alignment since I installed them, but plan on doing so this weekend.

Did you put brand new tires on the wheels?

Spinedoc, bigger isn't always better. I've driven 16, 17 and 18" rims on SL's in in my opinion the 18's really do affect the comfort of the ride.

My mechanic was an MB service manager for years and he feels that going up in size degrades the ride as well as the ABS and traction control. Many here have noted the rubbing.

Now that I've had time to really push my car over the past few weeks I can say I would like a small improvement in handling but have decided to stay at 16" since I don't feel the cost of new tires justifies the size change.

I agree that the 18" takes away from the ride, my 91 has 18" that were very bad vibration and ride, but it had old tires. I just put a new set of Dunlop FM901's on it and it rides SMOOOOOTH. Now it does not ride as smooth as my 96 with 16", but thats the price you pay for increased cornering and handling. I have a set of 18" AMG on order for my 96 and I know I will lose some of the comfort, but I think it is an acceptable tradeoff.

By the way the handling improvement from the 16" to the 18" is incredible. My 91 can drive circles around my 96!!
