Unthinkable?
I'm considering slapping a set of Euro Bumpers on my 1986 560SL... I understand this isn't difficult to do (or undo), that I'll be giving up a lot in the way of protection, but I'll also be making the car look like it was meant to look from the git go.

On the European vs. the federal bumpers: I wonder how much of the different standards are for our safety and how much is for the benefit of insurance companies?

Do you know of somewhere to buy euro bumpers for the 107? I have thought of doing that change myself. |

Does anyone have a pic of what the bumper(s) look like?

True European vs. '72-73 US bumpers
'72-73 US bumpers (107 chassis) look the same as European bumpers except that the US ones have overriders installed. As a result, they are often referred to as Euro bumpers. I don't know if there are differences beyond the overriders or not. A check of the parts numbers (if you can find that info) would tell the tale.
I don't believe there would be a fit problem with the 560SL FRONT spoiler and a Euro or early US bumper, but the turn signals and driving light mounts would need to be changed (or left off). The REAR valance panels for the '72-73 are NOT interchangeable with later ones. For example, the early US valance panels mount to the rear bumper, but the later US valance panels mount to the body of the car. Similarly the front of the two side valance panels is very different. Because of this, there may be a fit issue of putting a '72-73 US or Euro bumper on a car with later valance panels. Here are pictures of the front and rear bumpers on my '72 350SL (US): Last edited by M D Nugent; 05-08-2003 at 11:20 AM. |
