Thumping...

Hey guys, my 450SL has recently developed a loud and worrying thumping under medium to moderate acceleration. It only happens from a stop, and happens everytime, unless I'm barely holding the gas. My dad thinks it's a transmission hanger or something, I personally think it's the flex disk, but I dunno. The thumping comes from the middle of the car, seems to be from the driveshaft, or that area. I'm probably gonna take it in somewhere, because my dad thinks I'm mechanically illiterate.

My guess would be the center support bearing.

just talked to our BMW mechanic, really nice guy, and he said the same thing.

YojimboRobert: any ideas?
**********: driveshaft center support bearing
**********: rubber part let loose
**********: put in a rebilt driveshaft
**********: best bang for $ spent
YojimboRobert: haha... bang... I get it
YojimboRobert: sorry
YojimboRobert: bad joke
**********: hehe

now that I have that narrowed down, do you guys have any idea what it would cost? I don't think this is something I can do on my own, so I'll have to take it into a shop. Anyone ever done this on their car? Do I really need to replace the driveshaft? Thanks for all the help guys.

No, just replace the center support bearing, and while they're at it, they should replace the front flex disc. It is a black rubber square piece that is a normal wear item. They crack with age. If it fails, your driveshaft will fall down while you're on the road and cause all sorts of terrible damage. There is also a rear flex disc, but it apparently has a much longer service life as they are rarely replaced.
