Premium Fuel

I know the manual says to only use premium fuel, and that is what I have been doing, however what will happen If I use mid-grade or 89 octane instead? Will the engine not perform? will it cause damage? I will continue to use premium, if need be. I have never used premium fuel before in any of my other cars, 96 Corvette, 79 450 SLC, no ill-effects.
