timing chain replace 113...280sl
can new chain and rails be installed without pulling engine? sorry to keep asking simple questions but it does not come up on search and my "Star" CD is all but useless...hope I can "win" an ebay repair manual soon.. thanx

I am *guessing*, don't quote me, that you can do the chain and at least the top rails with everything in the car -- at least if you can get a master-link replacement chain.
The usual way to go about the chain is to open the old chain (Dremel tool?) splice in the new one, carefully roll in the new chain as the old one comes out, and then mate the two ends of the new chain with the master link. That's theory. Practice may be very different. s/b |

Check Haynes manual no. 63030, pg. 60. The timing chain and the upper slides can be changed w/o pulling off the front of the engine. There is a installation guide sold by Preformance Products, et. al. that is supposed to make the job much easier. If you get one let me know. I have to change the change on my 450 slc and will gladly rent it from you.
