Lynn -- what has been looked at on your car -- did a dealership look or an independent (or both)? I can't believe its a common problem or someone would have 1) written about it here or 2) techs would know about it an know how to fix it. Have you heard of others with this noise?

DanielG pay attention. Three of us have now reported the fluttering. that makes it reasonably common. It's easier to hear it with the hard top on with no wind noise.

fluttering

Man you hit it right on the head. With the top down you dont hear it all. Hard top on you can hear it very very clearly. Please let me know what you guys come up with.

CAr has been to dealer and inevitably he cant reproduce the noise. I put the mechanic in the car with me and of course it wouldnt do it. Its very intermittent

Chasb -- condescension is not welcome -- the fluttering you reported seems to be different -- even you noted that your remarks "will be of no help". I don't ask questions for my amusement I ask to get help, not attitude -- I don't appreciate you instructing me on what I have read here.

So far only Lynn reports a similar noise. My indie -- who is a seasoned mechanic, and his staff, cannot pinpoint the noise - a major MB dealership service department misdiagnosed it. The responses to my postings show that the very knowledgable members of this forum and the TECH forum have not come upon this noise. Lynn has reported that "NO ONE" has been able to find and fix the noise.

Clearly it is not common.

Lynn -- have you ever stood outside while someone else drives your car -- I wonder if the sound can be heard from the exterior of the car?

Lynn -- first time I took it to the dealer the noise could not be reproduced -- which made me think that the noise did not occur when the car was at operating temp. Since then, it has gotten somewhat worse and the dealer was able to hear it and make its diagnosis -- which was incorrect

I have not tried that but I will. It seems to be coming from inside the dashboad so I dont think it will be heard outside. Ill check. Thanks for your help

Thank you Lynn -- while I appreciate your dilemma -- it helps to know that my car is not alone --

the noise in mine seems to come from the right rear -- I think that is why the indie thinks its in the trans or the differential. I had the indie check trans and diff fluids to see if all is well -- he says both are filled and the fluids look good.

Lets keep each other up to date, through this forum, about any progress.

By the way, my indie has assured me that the noise is not an indication that the car is in imminent danger of failure -- its just an annoyance.

If your noise is in the right rear, I would checkout the fuel pump assembly. It's possible that one of your fuel pumps is starting to go. New fuel pumps are kind of expensive, so I wouldn't just throw parts at that.

I'll be the first to admit, though, that I don't know what "fluttering" sounds like.

Alan-- I saw your post when I searched fluttering. THe sound is similar, but occurs initially when accelerating from a stop, and may not occur later whent the car is at speed or accelerates further. The sound is similar, but I don't think its the cause here -- Thanks!!!!
