Question Ignition Key

I have a 450 SL Convertible that I just bought and the alternator failed. It was shorted internally causing the battery to go dead.
After I replaced the alt and went to start the engine, the ignition
ket will not turn in the ign. I tried turning the strg wheel back and forth, (it's locked). The trans selector is in park. foot on brake but
the key will not turn. Any suggestions?

You can try another key if you have one. More than likely the tumbler or steering lock is worn out. It's a big job to replace this stuff when the key doesn't turn. You can try a shot of WD40 or LPS in the tumbler to see if it frees it up, but I wouldn't get my hopes up too high.

I had that trouble with my '71 350SL on one occasion, and it turned out that I didn't push the key right in - it was about 2-3mm out.

It was impossible to start until I accidentally gave it a good shove in.

Worked just fine after that once I remembered to insert it fully.

Hope you get it solved soon!
