Hey guys!
I'm a -mature- woman with a few (okay, a LOT) of "vintage" (read OLD) Mercedes... In CT, where I live, car owners have to pay an annual "Mill Tax" on vehicles which, BTW, was supposed to have been discontinued after WWII... So, the older MB's actually cost a LOT less for annual taxes here and, if older than about 20 years, NO annual Mill Tax (woohoo!)... Added benefit for vintage era MB's in CT!... Anyway, I'm wondering if I can combine the age of a -few- of my MB's and deduct them from my current age?

Got the itch 2 years ago (I was 43). Wanted to share something substantially fun w/my son and thought a rag top would do the trick. Always a Benz owner, so an SL was a natural purchase.

Now, here's something to consider, the snob factor is very high...Peopler are not very nice when I pull in and park along side, but when cruising or coming back to the car to enter it, I get some very nice comments.

Buy it smart, keep it nice and drive it respectfully. Its not the car you drive, but how you drive it. Anyone can own a nice car i.e. punks w/their parent's $$ can buy any car they choose, but I respect those who can afford it, or have saved and now can afford it and really care for it, not just for show but appreciate what they have- thats the key!

Bought my 78 450SL and 73 450SL AMG when I was 19. Now I'll be 22 in August. I wanted a quality car that would be fun to drive, turn heads, and not be too hard to work on. And no, I don't only have cars older than me...there is the 84 300SD that is a few months younger.

When we married three years ago, I introduced my husband (second marriage for both of us) to Mercedes Benz automobiles and he LOVES them! Ours, by a reading of my signature line, are older Mercedes and for a reason... The newer ones certainly are pretty but we prefer the looks of the older ones. That and the fact that they're built like the proverbial brick s**t-house. Case in point: my husband and our daughter were in his 1975 300d some time ago when a deer decided to go to the afterlife a bit early. When our local police reached the scene, at the same time that I arrived in our 1983 240d, they were astounded at how little damage had been done to his car - dislocated (but not broken) headlight and rim, mild buckle to the hood on the right side and NO damage to the grill housing or fog lamp. To the police, it was a very literal example of Mercedes Benz safety and durability.
With that experience in mind, when I suggested an SL, he readily agreed... Thus, we acquired our 1984 (Euro) 280sl from a gentleman in VA, last year. We LOVE the car and have, as of this week, finished sorting out the issues you have in any 21 year-old car, regardless of mileage (our 280sl has 68,000 original miles). I will say, in defense of the older sl's. my husband finds it more spacious for the driver/passenger than the 1991 500sl I acquired and drove back to CT from Chicago with (what a ride!), at the biginning of the week. I prefer the 500sl as it has JUST enough advanced technology (okay, BIG engine) to light my fire. Both sl's are blue/blue - his 280sl a darker blue and my 500sl a lighter, prettier (to me) shade of blue. His will actually be more economical around town but I have to admit that I love the feel of the big V8, regardless of economy, when I put my foot into it.
As a last note, when we drove to our weekly cruise night, the 500sl received a TON of attention - even the younger teenage gear heads drooled over the V8 under the hood. And, on my drive back to Connecticut from Chicago, Illinois, there are a few owners of a Z28, a Corvette, a Jaguar XJ12 and varous and sundry other cars that learned to respect the 500sl...

'73 450 SL

I just turned 60--

I had been looking for a SL for about 15 years. One that was in good condition, low mileage and one I could afford. Almost a year ago, I found one just up the street that my wife fell in love with. So--here I am. It had been accessorized to look like a 560SL--Love to drive it with the top off with the wind blowing through what hair I have left! LOL.

Well, it seems I got all of you beat: I am 61 and bought my 1970 280 SL two years ago after I lost my 78 911 SC in an accident. Not my fault ! I had that car for 12 years. All my life I have owned two seater convertable sportscars, built some of them myself.....Over the past few centuries Road & Track did repeated comparisson tests of four luxury sportscars: Jaguar E-Type, Porsche 911, Corvette Stingray and Mercedes SL. I managed to have owned one of them at one time or another in the course of my life, it was just the SL's turn.....Now I am cruising in style and I still can tinker with it, just like a real sportscar....
I really like that gentlemans way of calculating once "sports car age" In my case it would go like this: my age: 61, my cars age: 35, that makes me: 26! Now if I could trade ages with my car, that would be something.....

I'm 35 and just bought my 94 SL 600. My 13yr old half sister said my 84 300SD turbo diesel was an old mans car and it didn't matter that my Ducati 900 supersport makes me feel forever 19.

I just got my 4th SL, a 1983 380SL. I drove my first MB in Germany in 1960 and decided "I've got to have one of these". Got my first in 1986, a 1979 450SL. Hard times hit , had to sell. Got my second in 2000, a 1979 450SLC.
It was totaled New years eve 2001. Then got a "dog", I got stung on a 1980 450SLC5.0. I WILL (pronounce that VILL) get this car in shape to drive and sell eventually. I also have a 1988 560 SEC and a 1988 300SE. I am 67 years old. Incidently, bought some new wheels and tires for the 83 and am hoping they fit, I have posts in the SL Forum and in the Wheels and Tires Forum.
