Great thread

Man, there are a lot of engineers and techies here.

I tried to retire at 60 after 36 years with AAA, with the last 10 years running the Internet sites - don't worry, I couldn't do a line of code if my life depended on it. As a sideline during the last 2 years, I was also deeply involved with our NASCAR program with Carl Edwards and Mark Martin. Retirement lasted 9 months before a marketing consulting gig fell in my lap so it's back to work. The two Mercedes found their way into our house as result of the downtime. I haven't spent any time monkeying with cars since the late '70's when I did a ground up restoration of a '66 Sunbeam Tiger with a 289 Ford V-8 stuffed into a little car 1/2 the weight of my 450SL. The 73 450SL was a shot in the dark - saw it, liked it, checked it out, bought it. The 91 420SEL was a deliberate buy after a ton of research and a lot of looking for the right one.

This thread is a hoot. Great reading following the folks over a period of years. Also kind of interesting to look at the demographics. There's a lot of us older folks here.

I am speaking to you from under the right wing of the 777 number 615. I sit here all day in the factory right where all the body sections are assembled fixing manufacturing problems (Mfg. Eng.). In my spare time I fix lower control arms, broken cam chains, broken oil drip cam oilers and first generation electronic fuel injection. Pick the 107s up for under 1K and sell em for 4k to 5k. I got 2 in the pipeline and I have 2 that I drive (1985 380sl and a 1975 450sl with 57K) and 1 that I am currently disassembling for parts inventory.

Contracts at Lockheed Martin in Marietta, GA. I've been with Lockheed Martin since 1981. I am currently 49 years old. At the rate I spend money on hobbies, I will be wheeling around an IV at work when I'm 75!!!

Self employed, in the field of composites. For those that do not know > fibreglass, carbon fibre and kevlar. Also entering into the plastics field.

Mercedes Benz > A very LOUD car, yet SO quiet and conservative with great quality- form and function. Only MB owners and enthusiasts will ever understand!

I'm an Environmental, Safety & Health Manager for a gigantic multinational industrial services conglomerate, and am happy as can be I missed the 'stop-loss' order by 2 weeks . I'm too pasty, pale, and Irish-American to be over there in the Sandbox, though I'd have gone had I recieved the call to do so. Former Army Combat Medic here...

Very interesting replies..................
I'm a photographer, but previously spent 20+ years as an auto technician with nearly 10 years for an MB dealer in the 80's.

I am a manager with Kraft Foods North American Nabisco Division. I have a B.S. in Bus Admin with a Comp Sci minor. I have approx 40 direct reports that I supervise. I am charge of payroll and hiring for the state of Oklahoma. This is our first MB and fortunate enough to purchase it at the tender at of 34. I enjoy playing sports, currently in a old man BBall League, Cars, Hunting, and Lawn Care. My wife and I have our first child who is 10mths old. We started the family later in life, but hopefully we are wiser now. If things go well, we both may be able to retire in 5 years based on a miracle investment we made several years ago. We just hope our son is able to meet kids his age at the retirement community

Semi retired NERD, at 52. I did almost everything in IT over 35+ years from operator, to programmer, analyst, DBA, director etc. etc. etc.

Now I run a small, and getting smaller, small business computer systems consulting service. Getting sick of fixing other peoples messes, many by people who claim to know what they are doing.

Stock trader is what I'm heading to (STRESS, you want STRESS), and doing some programming for traders.

AND my favorite job, Guard at the Roller Rink. I've skated most of my life.
Pay ain't worth it, but figure I get a 4 hour Advanced Aerobics workout 2 or three times a week, plus the once or twice the wife and I go on our own.
At least we get in free then !!!

what do you do?

I'm a retired aerospace engineer.... although not fully retired yet.. I work a couple of days in the Flight Test Group. I did a little high school teaching after my initial retirement in 2000. it was rewarding but the pay somewhat depressing. I prefer to be sailing... in the Chesapeake Bay area.... also have a passion for golf..but can't improve my game. So to keep me sane and reasonably involved..I bought this 82 380SL this past Sept. So now with dirty fingernails and nicks and cuts I write this response
