New wheels on the SL

Hi Guys,

I just put wheels from a 96 SL on my SL. The wheels were acquired from a friend. The price was certainly right. I had tires with only 3000 miles on them, so I just switched the wheels. I think they give the 92 SL an updated look. What's your opinion?

So, next the front indicators to completely clear then - as of around 98?

Seen those wheels before.... couldn't argue with those beauties ;-)

During production, did the wheels change to our style as standard at some point then, or were these an optional extra? Damn, wish I owned the 'Optional Extras' leaflet!

BTW - can anyone clarify when the indicators changed from orange to half orange to completely clear?

I think 95 was the first year the indicaters changed. I had a slight crack in one of mine, so instead of replacing it with the same< I bought two of the later ones. Oh, what we do for such details on these SL's, LOL. Attached is a better picture of the car with the 96 wheels. Thanks Guys.

I have an exceptional set of wheels like that with brand new Michelins on them if anyone is interested. They were on the car when I bought it and took them off as soon as I got home.

Bruce,

Nice lookers! If it wasn't night here and my SL wasn't dirty back from the paint shop today and my wheels were cleaner, I'd show you a photo of mine which are exactly the same (for whatever use that is )

I think rims make an enormous difference to the look of a car, and these ones are one of the best-looking styles around. So much so that I've decided to keep my 16" rather than getting 18"s.

Are yours mint like the rest of your car - no curb rash or stone chips?

A question to anyone with these rims... do your wheel lugs lie flush with the wheel face?

Mine are indented by an inch, and the dark holes look a bit empty. I seem to remember having the same problem with my 350SL and its pancakes.

Why can't MB supply lugs that fit flush, I wonder?

I love that 8-hole style. Always have since it first appeared for MB in about 1991/92. The style has been available for the SL since 1993 when it became standard fit on the then-newly released 600SL. For my money it is the best looking wheel on these cars.

Ken Silver: you must have the wrong wheel bolts. The bolts on the SL are quite a peculiar shape and are very long. I'd get them checked as a matter of urgency.

It's quite common here to have the shorter lugs actually. I was in my local dealership a few days ago and found that 4 out of 5 new and newer MB's all had disappearing bolts, including a 1991 SL500.

I didn't question it then, but I will on the next visit, just in case - thanks.

Bruce,

Your first photo shows your car a long way from anyone else in the parking lot. Sure are protecting that bodywork I've never managed to get more than half a dozen spaces away, anywhere.

Hi Guys, Thanks for the nice words. Ken I parked in the back of the lot to take the pics. Usually I'm away from the rest of the cars to keep any dings, etc. from the car. The wheels are almost mint, one v. small side scrap about 2" long.
