Blimey - My roll bar certainly works!

Just in case you're wondering if roll bars pop up without actually having an accident - I can categorically say they do!

After nipping round one of those annoying 'lumpy' mini round abouts (yes we're mad about our bouts here) I wondered what that clicking sound was!

After looking through my rear view mirror I noticed the top view obscured - ah, the roll bar's popped up

Drove home, how can I say, a little more gently - thinking I would have to go to MB for a repair but a read of the User Manual paid dividends and I felt much relief.

Just hold the roll bar button in for 5 seconds and she's fixed

Thought I'd share that with you guys...

Mine regularly pops up when I turn into our driveway at a higher speed. Comforting to know it will be there if you need it.

Mine has popped up twice, both times under emergency braking and a swerve. Reassuring to know it works.

JJ

Mine was under similar conditions - braking reasonably hard but not such the ABS took over (below what I would call emergency braking) coupled with a significant swerve - actually, I whizzed round a round about, so guess that's similar

SpineDoc - why not give it a go? As JJ said - nice to know it works!

Hey Guys, Mine pops up every time I turn hard and go over a rough spot or bump in the road. It's nice to know it's working. However when I'm cruising down the highway, I always have it up. I feel safer.

OK, so we've spotted the common denominator. Hard turns + bumps = Roll Bar excursion.

It's not just me then - glad about that!

how does it work?

I have the old model without the rollbar. I'm curious, what is the mechanism that causes it to pop up? Is it compressed air, electrical, mechanical???

Hmmm, here in Canada they are very rare but they did decide to build one two blocks from my house. I like'em.

My rollbar popped up once when I hit a little bit of curb heading into a gas station. Bit of a dickens to get it back down.

The roll bar is sprung loaded, upon an 'incident' solenoids (I guess) release the bar from being continually engaged with the electric motor. This causes a 'ratchetting' sound due to the mechanism being on a ratchet and thus provides a locking mechanism once the bar has sprung up. There's no way you can push it back - thankfully!

To get the roll bar to pop up you put one viagra pill in the gas tank every other day. Just a little humor guys.

remember that ol saying, 'one for you and one for me' - works even better when driver and car are in 'tune'

Neil

How nice it is to have someone with a definitive answer - well you sound definitive Neil ;-) and it makes sense - best I have a look for those sensors next time she's up on the ramp.

A while ago I slid my SL off the road. A large rock broke one of the rollbar tilt switches. The rollbar went up like it should, but the convertable top would not function. Replacing the switch fixed the problem. Just a little tidbit in case it happens to someone else. Seemed appropriate to the thread.

I make a practice of thanking my car every time the rollbar deploys. It may be silly, but I want it to know I appreciate the effort. Hopefully it will never be really needed.
