How interchangeable are cruise controls?

I have a 1974 450 SL with a non responsive cruise control. I can only find replacement components for 1976 and up. I doubt if any individual part could be swapped but can the whole system from a 1976 or so be used to replace what I have?

I have the same issue on a 74. I'd be interested in knowing options for replacement or fix also.
