Exclamation Need help/advice on replacing SL convertible top.

Hey guys, did a search on here and did not find too much on replacing the top. I was hoping to get as close to OEM as possible. Called the dealer and they want about 2k for the entire top, thats not including labor, ouch!! I can get a Kal-Glass for about 800 bucks, but have not heard good things about them. I do have an installer who works pretty reasonably, but he only uses Kal Glass. I would like to order a top that is of higher quality then have him install it.

Any ideas or suggestions on where to look for replacement tops??

Thanx much guys.

Ken

I've definately seen the OEM manufacturerer quoted before, their German (funny enough). What makes me mad is that I didn't bookmark their site!

They have either been mentioned on here or here http://forums.mbnz.org/

I've searched through my History too but no joy. Maybe some serious Googling will help?

If I find the link I'll let you know.

Ah, knew I would find it eventually.

Happich are the OEM for SLs. There are several companies still retailing their canvas products - sorry lost the links ;-(

Let me know how you get on as I'm also looking very seriously at replacing mine. Windows are fine now but canvas is creased - just like yours. I'm so jealous of those brand new tops that fit so snug and are so beautifully ironed ;-)

These guys run an ad in "The Star". They seem to be highly regarded. www.hirschauto.com Perhaps you could order what you need from them and have it installed locally. I think I'll be looking for a new top next spring too, so anything you guys come up with will be of interest. Tod

Two possibilities:
World Upholstery at http://www.worlduph.com/hubpageMERCEDES.htm

and GAHH at http://www.gahhinc.com/samplei.html (which sells to the shop that will do my new top next spring).

Both have been frequently mentioned on Mercedes BB's.

Thanx much guys. I did call GAHH up and spoke to a very knowledgeable guy. A full top with windows is $653, not too shabby and better than the dealers 2k. I have seen a couple of other sites that are a bit cheaper, one promised German canvas for $399. I think I am going to go with GAHH and have it installed locally, they do have a 5 year warranty.

Its a moot point for the moment since this New England weather has forced me to break out the hard top, sigh.

I think you'll be happy with GAHH.

My local Mercedes dealer has recommended GAHH on replacement leather hydes for my car. He says the fit and finish is perfect.
