Plastic gone gooey

Well again, I'm new here. Picked up my 90 500 almost 2 months ago.

The biggest flaw in this car is the center plastic piece above the rear view mirror, with the lights and switches in it. I don't know if a prior owner put something on it that ruined it or what, but I can rub it and smear the top coat.

The little plastics at the base of the sun visors feel soft too, but not as bad.

Can I get new ones, any other ideas ??

Anyone know how to remove, if I can get it out of there I might be able to fix it up at least better myself.

This is apparently a very common problem. I have seen a lot of posts about this on either Benzworld or Mbworld. Apparently the part is very expensive from MB (imagine that...!). A lot of people end up upgrading to wooden decorative ones from ************************ from what I've heard.

That's correct, it's very common. The cleaner you get it, the tackier it gets. You can wipe it with a silicone base dressing and make it less tacky, or buy a new piece if it really bothers you.

Thanks guys, somehow this will have to be resolved. It really looks bad. I'll try and get a pix but it's in the garage, and it is supposed to rain here for the next several days at least.

Looked at the PerformanceProducts site, really nice. Couldn't find a wood replacement for my piece. I'll check their catalog or give them a call.

Did find a bunch of other things I'm looking for so they'll be happy. Although I'll probably wait until spring ish, as it's being put away for the winter pretty shortly.
