Dirty Intake

on my 96 SL320 I noticed that when I look down the throttle barrell, moving the butterfly open that there is some icky stuff down there, a little oil has accumulated, probably from the crankcase breather and it is not exactly as clean as I would like it. Is there anyway to clean this intake area without removing it? I used to use carb cleaner on my old cars, but would that be safe? or would it cause that engine light to come on? An injector cleaner in the tank would not get, so I have to either remove it or spray some cleaner down it's throught. If anyone knows this is safe or not let me know. Thanks!
Regards,
Brian
