If I maintained my "beater" 1997 Taurus to the level that I maintain my SL, I'm certain that I would spend at least a G or two a year on it. I can think of 2K of work the car "needs" right now.

It's all in one's perspective

I guess it's all in your perspective. Can you imagine someone complaining that boats really suck because they require so much maintenance?

If you love something like a car, a boat, plane, watch, whatever, the cost of keeping it in pristene condition isn't the same as it would be on other things. It's not a nuisance, it's almost a joy. Getting it fixed up and back to spec feels exciting like buying something new is for most of us.

Not Lynn, jsut a guy who bought the needy, deprived, neglected SL

No, I'm not Lynn, but I did try to help. You can check my posts. I don't whine too much. Usually just looking for advce or help. I was quite green when I bought my SL but revved up the mechanic in me to rise to the occation. I usually don't do all the work on other cars that I do on the SL.

I think half of it is that I like to tell my family and friends about the jobs I complete. I just completed a brake job and tune up of the BMW and complete rear suspension rebuild on the Honda (pressed in 18 new poly bushings). With 3 old cars the work never ends. It's not just the SL...

Well, look on the bright side.

At least you've kept your sense of humour....

I think it is great to buy an older, uncared for and unloved car and bring it back to spec.

My brother and I did that many years ago with a '57 Chevy. The project was a lot of fun.

I spend a lot of time tinkering with my 1989 300TE. Half of the stuff I dod, it does not really need it. Ijust like to have cars restored as much as possible back to original.

Whenever my wife complains I tell her:

1. It is cheaper than therapy.

2. At least she knows where I am -- in the garage or in the computer ordering parts or checking for tech tips here.

3. Better to spend my time with a 18 yo German car than with an 18 yo German blonde.

4. Our son will inherit the car in about a year, so him and are bonding.

5. She should praise me for my commitment to hanging to old things...even when they need work and cost me money.

Excellent points!

Excellent points, LGB. I like the one about hanging on to old things. Eighteen-year old German cars should certainly be preferable to wives over eighteen-year old German girls. I'm thinking of Heidi Klum from a few years back.

I kind of liked the looks of Heidi Fleiss "that call girl madam" who was in a pickle years ago.

No wait, that was a different Heidi

Jim, I am disappointed

I always thought that Ms. Fleiss was a bit rough looking.

(Talk about hijacking a thread...especially one that started like this thread did...so long ago...)

I don't think that Ms. Fleiss actually ever plied her trade...she was more of a middle person...

Probably right, I think it was around 20+ years ago her case was going on.

I think she was akin to the "Mayflower Madam" Sydney Biddle Barrow, another one of those "madams" for expensive prostitutes.

I think Ernesto is correct, neither of them actually worked the trade except as in a pimping capacity.

Yeah, she was a retailer

not an actual service provider. I always loved the term "sex worker." Isn't that great?! What a career choice!

What was this thread about, anyhow? Something to do with *****ing about MB's wasn't it? We've segued from *****es to ho's.

Oh well, back to the breast thread . . .
