If you are an everyday Joe, DO NOT BUY ONE OF THESE. They are unreliable, costly and from the time you sit in it to the time you get out you wonder what will break today. Spare yourself some headaches and lots of money and buy something new. Im not bitter about it,, just tired of all of the expense and aggravation. Dont make the mistake I have made. Its really really not worth it. There is no Quality in these cars

I have had a 79 450SLC since Oct of last year. I bought it with 114K miles, the car is rust free, frame and body, and as far a reliability is concerned I have had no problems except for normal maintenance.

It always starts on the first turn whether it is 100 degrees F or 10 degrees F.

My 99 C43 is also reliable, in the 4 years I have had it, I've replaced one MAS and one O2 sensor and 1 battery.

Mechanically I put about $800.00 in parts when I bought it about 4,000 miles ago.
Now I have to change the round drive connectors & the hangar bearing.
Not bad for a 26 year old car that I can't even feel it idling.
I now have total into the car with purchase price $8,000.00 and that is with buying a kinder seat for the back and paint for the rear from the doors back.
The car now has 64,500 documented miles.
Buy a new KIA and it will cost me more..Don't think I will do that.

I just read your string. I am having lots of issues with a '98 SL500. Mostly electrical but still very expensive!!

I have gathered from what I've been reading here that the post-95 MB's are much more prone to mechanical problems than the older ones. It sounds like this may be due to electronics since those areas seem to be ever-increasing.

Would you say this is true in your case?

Try buying a 600SEL (W140). A rebuilt engine can go for upwards of $30,000!:behead:

I tend to agree, one Lil correction: tranny went "electronic" in 97 not 96 along with the extra gear.
