Lynn:
That's a nice looking 380SL. Sorry to hear about the grief it gave you. I think it may have a lot to do with the care (or lack thereof) that it may have received from the time it was new. Did the original owner fastidiously make all milestone service calls or was maintenance largely deferred? Deferred maintenance on a a less complex car (Ford) can create longterm problems, but it's the kiss of death for one of these SL's since parts are so expensive. Also, an experienced diagnostician eliminates most of the guesswork that really adds up the cost. (True for any brand of car) My 1988 Toyota Corolla has been bulletproof since bought new in 1988 (268K miles ago) because of regular preventive maintenance, tune ups and oil, filter and fluid changes. I haven't owned my SL for very long, but in the 7 years during which I had my previous car, a 1991 420SEL, it had been, up to the time I sold it, just as dependable as the Corolla. My Ford Mustang 5.0, however, don't even get me started. I hope Ford has learned how to build a tranny by now! Parts are cheaper, but don't last as long. Anyway, best of luck with whatever you decide to buy. At least you'll be under warranty!

I have had my 72 350SL for almost 5 year, have not had any major trouble. Truely sorry for a bad experience with your car , but I think you have bad mechanic , not a bad car . Peter K |
