What is it 1984 500SL?

I am going to buy this car next month. But what is it .I have these vin numbers.WDB10704612000953.Its labeled on the back as a 500SL. But the battery is in the trunk and i think if its a euro it would be under the hood.It has the spoiler on the back also.

very unusual - battery should be in the front, check the fusebox at the passeneger side footwell - the fuse legend should be in german, not english.

also, check under the headlights - there should be windshield washer jets,

also, check the labelling on the climate control/cruise control - these MAY be in german.

The ONE TRUE TEST (aside from blowing the socks of other non-euro sls) is next to the light switch. There should be a small rolelr-type dial - liek the ones some cars have for adjusting their dashlights. If it is a euro - it will have one of these rollers - they were used to adjust the headlight and not found on US models.

also, there should be a bunch of small plates on the inside of teh driver's door that tell you who imported it into the us and when.

and, some euro sls had a sport mode and economy mode setting next to the shifter.

and, most likley you have rear seats as well.

of course the bumpers front and rear should be small.

if it is an 84 - and it has a 5 liter engine, then it has to be a euro - just make SURE someone is not pawing off a 380. the 0-60 time for a euro 500 vs. a 380 are about 4 seconds apart - less than 7 seconds vs. 10 plus seconds.

The car is definitely gray market (Euro). The VIN tells all, and 107.046 was never available in the U.S.

vin again

I got the numbers that are on the plate in front of the engine bay on the metal behind the grill. These numbers are also stamped into the sheet metal in front of engine bay right behind the grill.I was thinking what year it was ? Maybe not a 84 and what year they put the 500sl battery in the trunk.I still gotta check numbers on the engine block.Didnt see any plates near drivers side door. This car is already alot of fun and i havent even bought it yet.I started it up and it seems to run great but idles high.Has a new exhaust and match spare rim.I cant wait to get this baby home.
I am just waiting for some money that is coming on the 24 th.If anyone knows any answes to the battery in trunk thing.Plese reply.

R107 is the chassis designation.

I think the actual chassis designation is W107. Mercedes didn't start using the "R" prefix until the R129 convertibles were sold starting in 1990.

So, in other words, W107 convertibles have the same chassis or body style, even when the engine changes, i.e.:

1972-1980 450 SL
1981-1985 380 SL
1986-1989 560 SL

In Europe, they also had other engines, and the badge read 280SL, 420 SL, 500 SL, etc.

I believe R107 refers to the 'Roadster' version, wheras W107 is a catch-all to include the coupe.
