Cup Holder

I'm tooling a cup holder for my 1994 Mercedes 500 SL. I believe it will also fit the 1990-1996 SLs. (I think those were the years with the slight inclined center cassette console which did not have a cup holder). My cup holder will fit in the cassette holder and can be inserted and removed quickly if desired. The cup holder will hold cups of various sizes. I'm trying to get input from people who might have an interest in this type of cup holder and to also confirm that the years 1990-1995 were the SL years with this type of center console. Other models may also have this type of console. The cup holder does not replace the entire cassette holder. It inserts in one cassette holder-the other cassettes can be used as before. The cost of my cup holder will be $25 plus S & H.

Well I have a 90 500SL, with the angled cassete holder between the shifter and the center armrest. So the 90's have the setup you are looking for.

Unfortunately I would probably not be interested.
NO FOOD or DRINK in my SL.
Although I did find it strange that they did not include cupholders domewhere.

But how does the cassete holder come out. I spent some time, but couldn't figure it out.

The cassete holder in a 1990 SL just snaps into place. If I remember correctly the snaps are on the sides. Just get a firm grip and pull it up. After I took mine out, I cut a piece of plastic to fit in the bottom of the hole. It makes another small storage compartment. Convientent for small stuff that gets lost in the armrest storage bin. I used a piece of 1/4 inch think plastic.

cup holder

Geno,

I just bought a 1995 500sl last Thursday.
I am replacing the Becker radio with a cd player and a mp3 hard rive system and I was wondering what to do with the cassette holder console. I bought a soda on the way home that evening and after entering the car I found even less places to set it down than my old 190e.

I am interesed in your cup idea.

regards

freddy

Bin

I replaced the cassette holder by a storage bin, which is a standard part number. Don't know what the part number is, but my dealer found it interestingly. Of course it cost $432.59.

Just kidding on the price.

Momo, thanks for that tip! If you get a chance, I'd like to see a photo of the storage bin. Is it plastic? What color?

MB makes a standard cup holder to replace the cassette holder in your R129 center console. You can buy it right from the dealer. My car comes equip with this set up, and it holds two cups nice and snug

Question

Elau,

Do you by any chance have the part number for the console cup-holder insert? My local MB tech is telling me that this is not something they offer for my '92. I was able to get the cassette holder out easily enough, but would love a cup holder to put in its place.

Thanks,

- Tony

Tonimus,
Sorry I don't have the part number. As I mentioned, mine came configured with the cup holder from factory. I have seen quite a number of 129s having the same setup as mine. You may want to try other dealer, as I am sure it is an OEM part.

Photo of bin

Sorry for missing this thread for a while. Here is a photo of the storage bin. It is in plastic with a sort of velvety touch.

Here is the picture of the OEM cup holder. The holders can be folded down and the whole thing turns into a storage bin.

CUP HOLDER

My cup holder is a great solution at a reasonable price for anyone who does not want to alter their center console. The initial installation is simple and quick(less than two minutes.

cupholder ok

I bought a cup holder from checkeredrabbit@myvine.com and it works fine. It is high quality. I also have one that I did not know how to install from Bird co. It fits under the compartment lid.
