The MB maintenance sheets for the pre-FSS cars were set up for a service every 7500 miles. It cycles back and forth between needing an oil service (lets say this is at 7500 miles), then a more major service is required say at 15,000 (30,000, 45,000, 60,000, etc). So you'd do a 7500 oil service, then an oil service plus a bunch of other stuff at 15,000, then at 22,500 (15,000+7500) you'd do just the oil service, then 7500 later at 15,000 you'd need the 15K service, etc.
Never seen this recommendation from MB at 5000, seems like that would have been a recommendation from before your '83 was sold............ Gilly

Just FYI, the original maintenance booklet for my '87 TD, says the following on pg.6, "Engine oil and Filter Change..Required every 8,000KM/ 5000 miles, or at least once a year." On pg. 7, "In case of severe operating conditions....maintenance work should be carried out at half the normal intervals..." Now in all fairness, the cover of this booklet says "Passenger Cars with diesel engines". Since most people do a little of both "normal" and "severe" driving, a safe bet would be in between 2500 and 5000.

More Oil Fun!
Okay, someone mentioned in an earlier post: 'a good filter'
What is a 'good filter' for an SL500 (mine is a 1998)? Are any of these good? I need to order some: Mann Hengst Bosch Which should I choose? As far as the oil goes, if I live in PA (lowest low usually around the zero range, not counting for wind-chill; highest high say 100 on an exceptionally hot day). Which weight? And should I use synthetic? I have to change my oil at least every 5-6k or at least every 6 months, whichever occurs first (requirements of a warranty). I have read through several posts and I just want a nice, safe answer! Thanks, Doug |

Thanks.
I'll take your word on it and go with the Mann filters.
Since my car already has 48K on it and I'll be changing every 5K or sooner, do you really think I ought to go Mobil 1? I don't mind the expense since it will only be a couple times per year, but some people have some good points about the huge oil capacity of these beasts combined with fairly frequent oil changes making full synthetics unnecessary. Anyway, I'll order some filters and hold off on buying the oil for a week or two until I can make up my mind. A heated topic, I know, but I'm open for suggestions. Thanks again, Doug |

Isn't a '98 FSS? If so, synthetic is required for warranty.

Uh oh
FSS? Help me out here!
I just bought the thing and don't even know what that means! But anyway, it is a 1998 so it is out of warranty anyway. I bought an extended warranty but it doesn't require any particular oil as far as I know. Doug |

It stands for Flexible Service System, or something along those lines. It's when Mercedes went to the longer oil change intervals.

FSS
Due to a Class Action lawsuit, the warranty on the engines of 98 and forward cars sold before DC mandated full synthetics for oil changes was extended to 150,000 miles. You should contact MBUSA and register ownership of your car and ask about the extended engine warranty. Use the search engine on this site to find out about the "FSS system class action suit." Did you buy from a MBZ dealer? If so they screwed you by not telling you about the extended engine warranty.

Okay
No, I didn't know any of that, but I'll assume that it has been filled with synthetic up until now and I will continue to do so then.
I didn't buy from a MB dealer, it was an Audi dealer who got this as a trade. I'll search for the info you referred to and try to figure out how to registser with MBUSA. thanks, Doug |

There should be a form in the owner's manual or Call
1 800 FOR-MERC (1 800 367-6372). They will help you. Read your owner's manual carefully. It will save you lots of anxious moments. If you don't have one, order one from MBUSA when you call.
