coolant leaking after engine is shut down

my 1983 380sl has intermittently leaked coolant after the engine has been turned off. I do not see any dripping while its running, nor do I smell the coolant while driving it. This has happened about 4-5 times, and it leaks about a pint of coolant each time. Any ideas???

You might need a new expansion bottle/radiator cap.

I have a 1994 500SL that had the same problem and it was a defective coolant cap.

re coolant leak

I chased a coolant problem for about a month on my 300SE. What found it was doing a coolant system pressure check. Auto Zone has the tester as part of it tool loan program. Big deposit (~$65) that is returned when the tester is returned. It will test both the cap and the system. Mine turned out to be a leaking seam in the radiator, wasn't leaking much coolant, but was big enough to leak pressure causing overheating.
