My best friend has located a beautiful 1984 500SL near his house. The car has records (although I have not checked to what degree) and has 165K. I know that all 500SL's of this vintage were grey-market, with all the implications therein. Are these cars desirable, or should he run like the wind from it? What are things to look for that are special to this series? Where do I find the name/history of the importer? The car has an outstanding interior, no apparent body damage, and the beautiful european bumpers. I know where to look for rust, and I don't yet know the condition of the A/C. Should I help him give it a good examination, or a classified ad section?
Thanks for any advise!

The MBCA publication "The Star" had a long article on Euro and US 500SLC's in the Sep-Oct '99 issue. It had a lot of good information.

The phone number for back issues is 719.633.6427 (cost $5).

Sounds like a nice car.

I have an 83' 500sl I picked up in January. The name of the importer on mine is inside the drivers side door jamb, near the tire pressure table. I haven't had problems finding parts either here or at the dealer but you have to make sure they understand it's a euro version. Easiest way is to give them the VIN 107046....
I'm in the computer industry so I do a lot of information searching and purchasing online. This becomes difficult because as soon as you enter in 83 model year their automated system only allows for the 380. You either have to call or look somewhere else.
See if the records reflect if and when the timing chain and tensioner were replaced.

Hope this helps.
