Quirky 560SL, Help Please!!
My '87 560SL with 78,000 miles suddenly began running with a very rich fuel mixture. When it's first started, it idles at 1700 RPM OK, then after the idle drops down, it runs awful and has no power at all. You can smell the raw fuel from the exhaust. The fuel distributor and EHA has been replaced. Also the ignition control module and coil are recent. Disconnecting the O2 sensor has no affect.
Can anyone please suggest what device(s) might be cauing this? Thank You in advance for any kind of assistance. William |

William:
Sorry to hear about your problem. Athough I have no clue what may be the cause - I encourage you to be persistent on this board as well as patient - this is a "low volume" board (IMO) so it may take a while before the right person visits again. Also, have you used the search features of this board as well as the general tech board? Have a great day - good luck getting that 87 back online! best, Dave 87 560sl 213,000 miles |

There are a lot of posts on this on the Technical Support forum, so you might do a search and a post there.
I am by no means an expert on this, but it "sounds like" - something is telling the EHA to go to full enrich. This would come from the engine computer. A likely cause is that it is getting a signal from the throttle sensor telling it that it is wide open that it needs gas - there is an o-ring in the FD that can leak - fuel return plugged (long shot) - mixture incorrectly calibrated to new FD
