Question any tricks to changing a R129 hood pad?

I just noticed that my hood pad on my '90 500SL is falling apart. Any tricks or "gotchas" that I should know about when replacing with a new pad?

i think I'd better do it before pieces fall into the moving parts.

Thanks,

Warren

I've replaced mine and there are two things to watch out for. Firstly make sure you use the correct adhesive - my first attempt was a disaster and the foam fell off!

I used 3M 8090

actually not quite this tin as I couldn't obtain it, but the Industrial version which is identical (as qualified by 3M)

3M Neoprene Contact Adhesive Spray 80

and it's superb.

Secondly, the foam fits snugly within the hood at all edges so pay special attention to how the foam fits before removing it. There's no need to remove every ounce of old foam just make sure that the surface is flat. Then clean the surface with a degreasing agent like thinners or similar and make sure you protect all paintwork!

It's dead easy and your hood will be beautiful once again

I replaced mine on my 300e ( will get a 129 eventually)

1. Do a dry fit first to get comfortable where the edges should go.

2. These look like they have big hoods so get an extra set of hands because once you set a part of it against the adhesive - it is there. Use 3m Super adhesive.

3. Cover everything you don't want over spray of the adhesive on - OVER PROTECT YOUR BABY WITH MANY SHEETS. This stuff is hard to get off of fenders , and engine compatment - I know.

Good luck.

thanks again

Guys, thanks for the great advice. I really appreciate it. My new hood pad is in the mail. If I have time, I'll post about my experience with the hood pad. Meanwhile, here's another shot of my new baby:

Regards,

Warren
