107 burning question.

Someone posted this question several months ago and I patiently watched for any responses...never came. Driving me nuts. I have stumped mechanics, SL enthusiasts, etc. No one knows. Here's your chance to be a hero...
On w107s, what is the little button on the inside lip of the glove compartment lid for?

If you open glove compartment door, there's a small round button (3/16" dia.) which protrudes only about 1/8" on left side of lip (about midway between left edge of door and lock mechanism). It's spring loaded, but seems to do nothing - except intrigue me. A friend who also has a 107 never noticed it until I pointed it out. He removed it to see if anything connected to it and it didn't appear that anything did. He said, "MBZ doesn't put anything on these cars without a purpose - I'll find out." He's still as puzzled as I am.
Anyone?

I have a UK spec 107 350SL. The switch on my glove box is for the glove box light, which is located on top right hand side of glove box. Possibly the same as the switch you are refering to, or an alarm switch??

Photo of you switch would be helpfull.

I've seen it too -- I am trying to think what function it could have. Is it possible that it would trigger the alarm if the glove box was opened from outside of the car when the top is down but the doors are locked? Just a thought. (of cousrse if its not connected to anything, then that would not function?)

Light switch is located near hinge (on mine). This black button is on inside lip. I thought perhaps it provided resistance when door is shut to keep door from rattling, but wait a minute - this is a Mercedes. I'd post a pic but I'm having some other work done and won't have car back til Monday. Surely this mystery will be solved before then!

The button on my 77 slc aligns with the switch on the removable flash light. Prehaps it has something to do with turning the light on when the door is opened.

Mystery button

I too have wondered what the little black button is for. The only thing i could think of was as an anti rattle or to help you open the glove box when you slide the lock. I would bet on the anti rattle. Scott

I almost did not believe that this mystery button existed, but I looked at the Wayward Woman today, and sure enough, there it was. I pushed it and could hear a very faint clicking in the area of the center vents. I'll check it out when the weather warms up a bit or I can get it in the garage.

there was an option that you could order with the car, a removable flashlight. open the glove box and the flashlight goes on. close the glove box and that small 1/4" nipple would trigger the charging of the flashlight. performance products lists replacement removable light for around $40 (don't hold me to this, its been a while since i checked) but if the option wasn't ordered with the car then the recharging receptacle would not be there.
