Bought another SL (K)
I bought my wife an SLK, and we finally took possession yesterday. (It has SL in the title so I hope I can sneak the announcement in to share with you all).
What a zippy little automobile these SLK's are! It is replacing her MX5, but apart from an open top there's no comparison between them. All they have in common is a similar length and 4 wheels - the Merc is streets ahead in every way. I would post a picture, but my wife has gone out in it and I haven't seen her since And of course I'm sure we will be the butt of all the "his and her matching Merc" jokes from our friends. It wasn't intentional, but what else can you buy when you want the best cars in the world! Congrats!
I like the way those look too! If you were pressed between buying a 500 and an SLK with 30K in the budget what would you buy?

In our country the SLK is mainly driven by woman, while I've seen mostly men in the SL500s. This may be different to wherever you are. Because of the difference in new prices of both cars - in my country the SL is over twice the price of an SLK - the SLK would obviously be newer and better value for your $30k. The SLK is definitely a bumpier ride. It's choppy and the seats aren't as comfortable as my SL. I've had trouble getting comfortable in the SLK too. The steering wheel is too close for my liking, whereas the SL has just the perfect driving position for me, an average 5ft 8" guy. But the looks of the SLK is my motivater! It's a design marvel. That smaller car definitely has stunning lines from every viewpoint, and we've had more wow's from pedestrians in the last day or two than from 8 months in my SL. However that could be that our silver SLK looks a cuter, friendlier car than the black SL which is a bit testosterone-inspired. Though the noise from the supercharged 4 cylinder exhaust is pleasant enough, the deep roar from the mighty V-8 is so much more exhilarating. Glad I don't have to make a choice between them... it's too hard! But the SLK is remarkably roomy. Not as large as the SL obviously - but not bad either for a smaller car. It depends how tall you are. I can tell you from experience this afternoon that the SLK seat drops so low at the touch of a lever, that my eyes were almost at the level of the windscreen bottom. It could accomodate a 6ft 4" frame easy.

The SLK is pretty roomy (I am 6'1"). The leg, hip, shoulder and head room are all adequate for my needs. It is not as spacious as my SL; but it is comfortable like a fitted suit. The boot is superb, very practical. The cabin is not claustrophobic, either. KenSilver, let's see some pics. here is ours with my old C240:

However, just squint your eyes a little to exclude your rather nice C240 - with even nicer Monoblocks - and you'll find our SLK is exactly the same... same wheels, same body mouldings and colour, same interior. I'm planning to get both our SL's together soon for a pic, so that will be forthcoming when our schedules allow (My secretary and her secretary etc). Bump-Be-Gone!

So after bringing them back to factory pressure the ride was considerably improved... even my wife, who is not a car buff (but is rapidly becoming one!) noticed the difference. So I can report the ride is now very pleasant, and far from being bumpy as when we first drove it. Good Going!
As far as I can remember I have wanted an SL. Over twenty years and countless trucks and vans ( company vehicles) later, I am finally close to my dream car.
Didn't want to be in a positon where I could barely afford the car. The reason I would consider an SLK is because of the size. I have never sat in a SL but have gotten a good look at the SLK. The hills here are CRAZY! Super tight turns and evelation changes. The bigger the car the more likley to brush up against overgrowth on the mountain roads. NARROW too. Anyway sweet cars guy! My dream car is on Ebay right now. 500SL Sport 30k miles and a panot top. Black on Tan. Xenons. Just awesome! Mike |
