Any SL600 owners out here care to share...
I recently sold my 73 450sl and am looking to replace it with a 1998 SL600. I found one at a local independent dealer with 4,000 miles. Bad colors white/grey, pano roof, asking $49,500.
Any feedback on asking price? What should I look for? My only expericence with the 129's is a 1991 500sl my mom had a few years back, overall a great car with the exception of the A/C evaporator going BIG $$$ to repair AND the dealer cracked her windscreen while digging into the bowels of the dash to get at the evporator. This would be a summer driver 5-10k a year. THANKS Andrew Conti Current rides 1989 328GTS 11k 1966 Merc 200D fintail 32k (documented original miles) 1991 Volvo 240SE wagon 172k (trusty steed!) 2003 Chevy Silverado custom lowered 2/4 drop 5k (new steed i hope!) |

Oh boy,,,, price is on the cutting edge of fair and a rip with those miles. But the color would kill it for me no matter what the price is. You ought to be able to deal on that car. As far as problems,,, use the search.

Not so sure that's such a bad color combo...
...but IMHO, just get the lower cladding painted white to match...

'98 has mono-tone body. They stop making two-tone in '95.
The asking price is a little on the high side, given the number of people unloading their V12 in view of the price of gas going up with no end in sight. Check out e-Bay and use it as your price indicator. I will be very careful about a car with this low mileage. Car is made to drive (even I only drvie mine less than 3K a year), but a '98 with only 4K on the clock? That means 600 miles a year? I most certainly will take it out for a long drive, and check for leaks, including the exhaust manifold. Remember, the 600 is extremely expensive to repair, especially you are buying from an indie without Starmark.

Colour looks great with the panoramic roof and nice wheels, so long as you keep it really, really clean.
I'd be more concerned about the low miles. Nothing harms a car like not being driven. I'd prefer a V12 with 40k on it than 4k. Price seems quite high for the year.

I agree 100% with JJ.
Also, use the $3+ a gallon for gasoline as a bargaining tool.

So far most of us agree that white/grey is a good color combo. The 600SL is deliberately understated in color and styling but not in performance. If you want a screamin' all-out sports car buy a red or yellow Porsche, Ferrari or Corvette.
Another advantage of white is that you can refinish the front spoiler yourself with a can of basic white spray paint from Pep Boys - it is virtually an exact match to the Mercedes Arctic White factory paint. If I can do it, anyone can do it!
